History: Eridan hails from District 4, from a reasonably wealthy family for District standards. He didn’t do much work in the sea unlike other children from 4 as his family was well enough off that he didn’t need to, and instead he spent much of his time reading and learning the history of Panem and how the Capitol operated. He would avoid working in order to study, and because his father was well-respected and feared around the docks (and because he was of a high enough rank he couldn't be questioned without causing drama), the boy would be left alone. He would be resented by his peers for being able to get away without working, but he was protected by his family's position within the district.
Because of this, his life was largely uneventful up to his reaping. He could afford to just relax, and he had plans of following in his father’s footsteps and being the overseer of a large fishing operation. He never considered that his name would be drawn during a Reaping, and he assumed that his life would continue to be comfortable, up until he was reaped. Eridan almost refused to go, and he was horribly confused - he had never had to take out any tessarae, and he was only 15 so his name hadn't been in that many times. He was completely terrified of going into the Arena, because he didn't have the years of physical labor others from his district had. All he had was the fact he was reasonably healthy, and all the studying he had done. He was fascinated with the stories of victors, and he had a mind for strategy. It would be the one thing that could put him ahead of his competitors, because his score was an average 7. He didn't fare too well in training, either, being too stubborn and too callous to get along well with anyone, even the trainers.
Somehow he managed to survive the 73rd Hunger Games, but it was a close call. He was horribly wounded, but he was patched back together and managed to return to his district without even a scar. He would take full advantage of his new status as a victor, and the riches this afforded him. He didn't have to work ever in his life, and he could gloat over his rather vicious victory. He moved into his house in the Victors' Village alone, and effectively cut ties with everyone who he knew in District 4. The way he saw it, they didn't care for him or expect him to win, so why should he let them leech off of him? He was going to take a change in his life, and just relax. He managed to relax for barely over a year before being asked to the Capitol for the new version of the Games, and he didn’t do much in his off time. He had access to more books than he could ever dream of, and he was set for life now. He was hesitant about becoming an escort, but with the new format of games, and with no reason to stay in 4, he was eager to take up his duty as a mentor, so he could learn more about the worlds outside of Panem.
Presentation: Eridan is pompous and arrogant. He knows he’s better than everyone else, for virtue of being Eridan. And he shows it, too. He’s condescending and rude to those who aren’t on the same level as him, and he believes that’s everyone else. There are few that Eridan believes could be his equal, and fewer still that he believes could be his better.
Those he does see as being on his level or higher get marginally different treatment. There’s a tiny bit of respect, because superior people should stay together. They and Eridan are better than everyone else, and therefore they should stick together against those who are beneath them. But he’s still crass and abrasive to others, especially when it comes to things like ideals and beliefs. He’s a smart boy - and that’s not just from his ego, he actually is extremely intelligent - and that means that he knows best about any and every problem. He wants to believe that he’s an authority on history, on war, on science. On, well, everything, and he has put the time and effort into studying so he is intelligent.
This doesn’t really mean he’s right, and he never comes across as being particularly studious. Really, he comes across as being a brat. He’s overly dramatic and emotional, though quite a lot of it is put upon. Emotional theatrics are how he gets attention, and attention is something he thrives off of. He deserves being in the spotlight. He demands the respect and attention of everyone, because that’s what he believes he deserves. He wants nothing less but the respect and adoration of everyone he meets, even though his bratty, self-centered actions don’t really deserve any respect or adoration at all.
It’s not something that Eridan realizes, though. He’s too involved in this image he’s been building up to realize that the way he perceives himself is nothing like the way other people perceive him. He thinks very highly of himself, and he definitely comes across as arrogant and self-absorbed. He doesn’t quite notice the plights of others, as he’s too concerned with his own problems and issues. This is something that definitely grates on others, but when confronted he doesn’t really realize how he could have done anything wrong. He’s a smart kid when it comes to books and schooling, but when it comes to how people work or operate he’s at a complete loss.
Despite his being oblivious towards what other people think and feel, he tries to emulate others. He’s spent years throwing himself into history books and reading about the Games, and he’s worked so hard to make his image that of someone capable and in control. He’s read of the greats as told by the Capitol, and he tried to mold himself in their images. This has made Eridan brash and cocky and, before being thrown into the Games himself, a fan of how the Games were run, because he felt that was how it should be. He considers himself an expert in the Games and in the history of it’s victors, and he does know quite a bit - but only what has been Capitol sanctioned. He doesn’t seem to realize that there’s a heavy bias in history because of this, and believes that’s whatever is in these books is law. He considers himself a scholar and that his knowledge is the end all, be all even if it’s not.
His ego won’t let him ever contemplate the fact that he could ever be wrong, and that applies to more than just his intelligence. He disregards other people and their emotions and thoughts if they’re too radically different from his beliefs. That, and he’ll insult and mock them for being wrong. He’s an abrasive, surly child who’s desperate for attention. He just doesn’t know how to get it.
Motivations: Eridan wants to be accepted. He wants to feel like someone of importance and he wants to be respected by those around him. He’s got it into his head that he needs to meet a certain ideal that nobody but him really cares about, but he’s so obsessed with being this perfect man that he ends up driving everyone else away because it’s made him this snarky, aggravating kid. He just wants to be a good man, but his idea of what makes someone a good man has been warped by Capitol propaganda and his own lack of understanding. The Games changed this to a degree, because now he’s starting to realize that his ideal is flawed and that while trying to be like a Capitolite might save his skin, it will push away anyone and everyone he’s ever cared about because he’s not the kind of person that he should be. He’s stuck in this odd middle ground of immature and mature, and he’s not sure what to do with himself. He wants to be someone so, so important, and he wants so badly for someone to find him important that he’s at a loss with himself. He likes himself for who he is, but he’s afraid that being himself is never going to be good enough despite how desperately he wants to come across as the best and by how egotistical he may be. The fact of the matter is his ego is delicate, and it’s going to take more time for him to actually grow comfortable with himself.

Thread: [Eridan doesn’t look particularly happy. He’s sneering at the communicator, but...there’s something that seems put upon. Like he’s trying to way too hard to be condescending, and he’s missing by just that much.]
Well, I can’t say I’m really surprised by how horrendous all a you are.
[He speaks with a decidedly rough, un-Capitol accent.]
I’ve been rewatching the tapes, an’ the whole lot a you w-would be better off just rollin’ over and dyin’. It’d make watchin’ you a lot more bearable, fuck.
[And he even has a stutter! It’s a pretty unfortunate side effect of his time in the arena - and speaking of the arena, it hasn’t been very long since he’s come out of it. A little over a year, and...it shows. His eyes look more tired than any 16 year old’s have the right to, and he looks about ready to pounce at the smallest movement.
He sighs dramatically, adjusting his scarf - thick and chunky, a complete divergence from any sort Capitol look he could be going for - and raising a delicate eyebrow.]
District four is particularly disappointin’, but that’s why the called me here. Name’s Eridan Ampora, and I’m going to be mentorin’ you assholes until you’re not so pathetic.
Prose: Not this again. He did this once already, got a decent score and then...he survived. He made it through without freezing to death, he made it through without bleeding out. (He could still feel the pain of the sword slicing across his stomach some nights, when he couldn’t sleep.)
So why did they want him back? Didn’t he do his best to keep them entertained already? (Maybe they were disappointed, disappointed that so many others had died without confrontation and they wanted him to do it all over again, put on an even better show, because that’s what tributes and victors were for.)
He keeps his back straight as he stands in front of the Gamemakers, taking steps that are as sure as he can make them as he browses through the weapons laid out before him. Knives, swords, spears (which he pointedly avoids), a bow and arrows. There’s every weapon he could ever dream of using against a person was there, and they wanted him to use them again. It hadn’t even been two years since he had come out of the arena frozen and with his guts threatening to fall out of his body, so the weight of a blade in his hand is horrifically familiar to him. He grabs one of the throwing knives, and within seconds it’s plunged deep into the bullseye of a target.
Eridan smiles, dropping his hand. He doesn’t want to go back, knows that if he goes back in this time he won’t come out, but he’s not going to go down without impressing the Gamemakers.

Past victor: Eridan was at the 73rd Game, known as the one where most tributes died of exposure. The Arena was large, and it appeared to be a large, sprawling metropolis set into a mountain side. There weren’t many places to hide from the elements, as most of the buildings couldn’t be entered, and the ones that could had little to no insulation and had large, gaping holes that left someone exposed. The terrain outside of the city limits, if anyone made it that far without, was barren and rocky. The Cornucopia was set in a large, empty square, right in front of the remains of an old cathedral.
The muttations of this arena were largely aerial, with large wings and small, furry bodies. They seemed to be affected by the weather only slightly less than the tributes, but they were still a huge menace. There wasn’t much else in the way of dangers, but Eridan did come out of the Arena mostly dead.
Eridan managed to get Capitol attention from how vicious he was. Having snagged a thick coat from the Cornucopia he fared pretty decently, and he managed to kill three other tributes. The most dramatic kill would be his first one, the boy from District 3. Eridan stumbled upon him and the girl from District 4, the two of them having formed a hesitant alliance before Eridan’s interruption and attack. The girl fled while he and the boy from 3 scuffled, and Eridan was almost overpowered and killed then and there - the other boy had had a weapon, after all. Before the boy could stab him Eridan managed to grab a thin, sharp shard of stone and with a panicked swing blinded him with jabs to the eye. This did not kill the boy, but in his shock Eridan was able to grab the boy’s knife and slit his throat.
After this Eridan seemed to move on autopilot, and he was able to kill the girl from four, who had been watching the scuffle the whole time too shocked and scared to move.
The Arena would end with Eridan, who had picked up a spear during his travel, and the girl from 8, in front of the cathedral. While Eridan had the advantage of a longer weapon (the girl had a sword on her, which was still impressive), the girl was fast and managed to get a slice at his abdomen before Eridan could pierce her heart with his spear. She died immediately, and Eridan was rushed out of the Arena for surgery. It wouldn’t do for their newly crowned victor to die before he even left the Arena, after all.
Past victor AU: Eridan is from Four, the fishing district, and he’s...mostly fond of it. Eridan is not a swimmer or very fond of fish, but it’s a reasonably well of district and he had a cushy life. He would have certainly preferred to live in the complete, safe luxury of the Capitol, and he dreamt of a life in the Capitol for years before he was reaped. Seeing what the Capitol was like...he was as disgusted as he was intrigued, and despite the trauma and bitterness he felt towards the Capitol after what happened to him, he couldn’t deny any longer that the Games were a very effective way of oppressing the districts to a point where they couldn’t fight back. He wished he could change things, but he knows now that the only way to defeat the Capitol is to outthink them, and he values his life too much to outwardly rebel.
Hunger Games AU: Trolls. That’s why they’d bring canon Eridan in, really - the Capitol seems obsessed with the species, and adding that to Eridan’s personality would give them all the excuse they need. Eridan might not be extremely anti-Capitol, but he’s pompous and arrogant and he feels like he’s too good for the Capitol. He needs to be brought down a peg, and facing his canon self would definitely do that.
